The most identifiable landmark in Cabo San Lucas is the Arch or El Arco, which has become iconic for the state of Baja California Sur. The Arch sits at the very point of the Land´s end where there is a beach called Lover’s Beach or Playa del Amor and some say it is so-named because it is where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez and that the two oceans meet to ‘kiss’ each other and then part ways again. The Arch, where these two waters meet, is the result that nature carved after a combination of water battering the rocks for years, plus the heat of the blazing sun and strong winds. The gradual erosion on the rocks of these combined elements created one of the wonders of this desert paradise, now appreciated by travelers lucky enough to visit this picturesque Mexican resort town.

There are probably many untold stories about the arch of Cabo San Lucas, stories full of adventure and intrigue that we can only deign to imagine since historically the Arch also served as a landmark for hundreds of Spanish treasure galleons that passed by on their voyages back from the Philippines. They used it as a reference point for a place where they could refill their water supply.

Lover’s Beach is worth visiting especially if you plan to get a close-up view of the Arch, but the beach itself is quite small and the easiest way to travel there is by water taxi. Keep in mind that there are no services there, so it is recommended to take a packed lunch and plenty of water. Swimming near the Arch or the Pacific Ocean side of the beach is very dangerous because of the powerful waves and currents, so visitors are advised to stay on the Sea of Cortez side of Lover’s Beach where the water is calmer and clearer. Snorkelers will discover an abundance of multi-colored fish.

To see for yourself just how spectacular this area is, we recommend visiting during the months of May, June, October and November.
