Cancun, Q.R. — As part of its plans for future growth in Mexico, American Airlines (AA) plans to make the Cancun International Airport its new hub for the Caribbean region.

José María Giraldo, general director of AA in Mexico, said that the destination of Quintana Roo is one of the most attractive for travelers, which is why the airline intends not only to increase the number of flights, but to also provide different connectivity options to its passengers.

He says American Airlines will advance in its alliance with Interjet to position itself better in Mexico, explaining that they plan to have their new Cancun hub operate at the same level as those in US cities such as Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia.

“Mexico is the most important market for American Airlines outside the United States. In South America we have 255 flights per week, but in Mexico we almost triple this figure,” he said.

Due to the continued increase of passengers visiting Mexico, Giraldo mentioned other plans of the company such as the strengthening of operations in Los Cabos, as well as the start of a flight to Oaxaca beginning December 19.

He added that in June of 2019, the company will begin their Durango-Dallas route, increasing its total frequencies to DFW and anticipated the possible creation of DFW-Cancun and Chicago-Cancun routes.
