Isla Espiritu Santo

May 03, 2022

On the Sea of Cortez, just a short boat trip of around 1-1 ½ hours from La Paz, which itself is just 2 hours north of Los Cabos, is Isla Espíritu Santo; the island is a protected area and was declared part of a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1995. This paradise is exactly the kind of place you dream of when you think of the perfect island destination.

The radiant, white-sand beaches and contrasting red rocks of the island are some of the many things that make this area so beautiful. But it’s the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez, which the famous marine biologist, Jacques Cousteau called the ‘World’s Aquarium’ which attracts so many visitors. The island and the surrounding waters are home to many different species such as sea lions, turtles, manta rays. dolphins, sharks, many species of birds and even whales. The island itself has many secluded beaches where you can walk and take in the scenery everywhere which is absolutely beautiful; and obviously the snorkelling and scuba-diving possibilities are spectacular and endless.

La Paz is the capital of the State of Baja California Sur and is itself a lovely attraction for visitors. Just take a stroll along its impressive ‘malecon’ (boardwalk) to see the wonderful views over the Sea of Cortez and stop off at one of the many great restaurants along its length and have a quiet afternoon drink or meal as you watch the sun go down.

A visit to La Paz and Isla Espiritu Santo will not only be a time of complete relaxation and a get-away, but will leave memories that are sure to last a lifetime.
