CANCUN TO BECOME A PLASTIC-FREE ZONE

JUNE 4, 2019

The Congress of Quintana Roo has unanimously approved a law prohibiting the use of materials and utensils made of plastic, such as straws, polystyrene glasses, cutlery among others, as well as unicell products including plastic bags, in supermarkets and convenience stores, pharmacies etc. The new law exempts equipment and materials used in construction and the packaging of goods and products used for medical purposes.

The banning of all plastic products must be carried out in coastal areas and the offshore islands, plus all other vulnerable zones, in the next six months and the new law will come into immediate effect thirty days after publication in the Official Journal of the State.

For the rest of the State (cities and towns) there will be a maximum period of one year to apply the new law, with the purpose of giving local companies the chance to switch to eco-friendly alternatives, thereby creating a new comprehensive management scheme to reduce, re-use, and recycle waste, as well as regenerate natural resources and the whole environment of the State of Quintana Roo.
